Municipal courts done right
The city parks department has been converting and dedicating courts for over a decade, and it shows in the surfacing and the net quality. These aren't tennis courts with tape on them. Rec center programming is organized, cheap, and posts real schedules you can plan around.
The social temperature
Warmer than Naples, less cliquey than the gated communities. St. Pete draws a genuine mix — retirees who've played twenty years alongside thirty-somethings who picked it up last spring. Rotations tend to be inclusive rather than rating-policed, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you want.
Weather and timing
The peninsula catches Gulf breeze, so morning play stays tolerable deeper into the summer than inland Tampa. Afternoon thunderstorms are almost a daily fixture June through September — plan around 8am, not 4pm.
